Outdoor Education
Before becoming a professional educator, I spent 20 years as a professional outdoor adventure guide and instructor. Through those twenty years, I held various guiding and instructional roles across Canada as a certified and practicing whitewater raft guide, whitewater kayak instructor, swift water rescue instructor, wilderness first aid professional, sea kayak guide, alpine, nordic and telemark ski instructor, and mountain bike instructor. In 2001, I returned to the Ottawa region and was part of the team that developed the curriculum for a partnership program between Wilderness Tours and Algonquin College to establish the Outdoor Adventure Guide Diploma program. After two years as lead instructor for whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, nordic skiing, wilderness cooking and winter camping, I decided to follow this passion for education by becoming an Ontario Certified Teacher. I am now approaching 45 years of experience as a professional outdoor guide and outdoor experiential educator. As Kanata Montessori Schools' Outdoor Education Department Head, I oversee the Elementary Forest School Program, the Junior High Outdoor Education Extra Curricular Programs, and I teach the Senior High Grade 10,11 and 12 Outdoor Education Classes. Extra curricular wise I run the Mountain Bike Club, the Alpine Ski and Snowboard Club and am the Duke of Edinburgh Award Supervisor. As well I am a Senior Intermediate qualified History, Geography educator, and Spec Ed. Specialist
